Heart Day Hunt Part IV

"Tap, tap, tap."
Rudi's nose twitched.Sasha's toes curled. They both stirred in the twin guest beds.
"Tap, tap, tap."
Covers flew up in the air. Rudi was awake. The Orchid Whimble ran to the window, mumbling, "What a meddlesome creature, that woodpecker. I'd like to…"
He stopped in his tracks. The tiny bird with the flicking tail and bright eyes was no woodpecker, but, rather, the dainty house wren, Brill.
"Hi Rudi," she began excitedly. "I thought I would never wake you. Look outside. Only a few flurries are falling now, the sun will soon be shining, and we are all going to have the bestest Heart Day Hunt ever!"
Sasha joined her brother. Together they peeked out the window. Indeed, it was a glorious mid-February day. Hillside Whimbles, Jacob and Wendell, were just opening the Pillow Whimble gate. Their flighted Companion, Brill, had been quicker to arrive. Trolliver trotted out to meet the two guests.
"You better dress quickly," the wren chirped hurriedly. "Sophie and Manning have planned a delicious picnic in their oak tree house. While we're eating, the White Hare will be busy hiding Heart Day gifts in the Woodland garden. I know most every plant is sleeping now, but the garden is still cheerful in the winter sunshine. It's a two hour Whimble walk to The Woodlands so get a move on."
"Slow down, Brill. What White Hare?" Rudi questioned.
(to be continued from The Upper Meadows to The Woodlands - Caelumen)
