"The new batch of heart shortbread cookies will be ready in moments, Annabelle!" declared Gillian. "This is not the time to check your sweet pea seedlings. It simply isn't!"
"Well," replied Annabelle to her Companion the Tiny Field Mouse, ' I suppose you are right. Yet, after this batch is out of the oven and cooling, we must go look at those seedlings, no?"
"But, of course, Annie," answered Gillian, knowing full well she would be intoxicated by the look and scent of each and every shortbread cookie. He thought to himself, "There will be time enough to see about seedlings after we have decorated these special cookies."
Gillian was right. He knew his Annabelle better than any other soul. She jumped up and down when she saw the perfect hearts coming from the oven and sat, mesmerized, as they cooled on the window sill ledge. As always, it was the constant mouse who mixed frosting and brought out all sorts of sparkling sugar pastry yummies from the kitchen pantry. Then the fun began.
It might be added that no seedlings were checked that day.
