Brill the Tiny House Wren

Brill the Tiny House Wren

Jacob was just a few days old when he was taken out into the early spring sunshine. While enjoying his first outing, Jacob’s mother and father sowed vegetable seeds in the kitchen garden. Soon a house wren came to call. She landed on the cradle and peered in at the sleeping Whimble. She then glided over to Wendell’s parents. She had important news from King Thaddeus. The king wanted to gift infant Jacob with of one of her three fledglings. She and her mate were pleased to choose Brill, the youngest. Although smaller than the others, Brill was strong, sweet, and clever. Jacob’s parents heartily accepted the offer.

That afternoon the house wren returned with her youngest. Having just had her first few flying lessons, Brill landed a bit clumsily on Wendell’s sky blue blanket. The Whimble was startled at first but soon became fascinated by this chatty happy bird who, in no time, became his fast friend and everlasting Companion.

Several years later, when Wendall was born, the wren was ever so pleased to share an enduring affection with Jacob’s younger brother.

Brill lives in her own wee cottage inside the brothers’ sewing room. Hazelnut roots support the room and a nearby large round window. From her miniature entrance porch, she often advises Wendell and Jacob about their work. Although occasionally meddlesome, Brill is also helpful. She cleans up the snippets under the long table, flies with notes and small packages to various destinations, clips one herb or another from the nearby kitchen garden for a tasty meal, and is the scout whenever the two Whimble brothers take an afternoon walk.
