The Birth of Edwin Valentino, Hare for All Seasons Part I

My brother, Jacob, and I were asked to assist in the creation of three dimensional figures. We organize the sewing shelving - arranging beads, buttons, trims, ribbon, fabric, ribbon. We also orchestrate any dying of wool or silk velvets for various products.

Recently we participated in 'The Birth of Edwin Valentino.' We both notice that with each step taken to complete a piece, the figure becomes REAL. The personality shows itself very early on, and before long both Jacob and I are talking to whomever we are fabricating. We thought you might like to join our process of gaining another friend.

To set the stage, Annabelle the Sweet Pea Whimble and her Companion Gillian float about in her Thimballoon, spy a beautiful flower, and swoop down to pick it for the drafting table. Then we organize all items for the armature (skeleton) to be constructed. Sometimes we cut dowels, drill holes with either drill or dremel, paint stands, cut fabric for body, arms, legs, face, ears. When all is assembled, Miss Martha begins her work.

We are asked to help sew an ear or shoe together.

A silk body is sewn to the wood and millinery wire frame. We climb our Whimble ladder to secure the face and ears made from the finest white wool. Next, glass eyes are introduced - a bit tricky having the perfect placement for both.

After eyes, Miss Martha manipulates facial features with needle and invisible nylon thread. We do an embroidery stitch to close each foot while she's completing her task.

Edwin is 'becoming.' He's talking even before he has hands. After everyone was in bed and moonlight lighted the newly formed figure, Jacob and I made our acquaintance with Edwin. He told us he was a Hare for All Seasons and did we know that his last name was Valentino? Jacob brought us white and jasmine tea, and we chatted quietly about his soon to be created costume."
