The girl left at dawn. She edged through the screen door, stepped on the moist long grass, ran. Reaching the stream, she looked back. The house was silhouetted in early light. She turned to the water. It rushed along powerfully now that the mountain snow had melted. She slipped into the stream. It held her. In an instant she was carried down toward the sea. Smooth pebbles gave way to sandy bottom. Water warmed, slowed, eddied about the girl, taking her out to its depths. She floated slowly down into the silken quiet. Childhood animals surrounded her, guides with their staffs. Stars’ light danced off the sea bottom. Endless jewels lay below her. What wonders to explore. The girl had found her way home.

There was a hiatus between beginning this work and completing it. Whimble Designs was ramping up.  The building on Monroe Dr. in Atlanta was  bought in October 1995. Planning began in 1996. Whimble was incorporated in 1997 as renovations began in earnest and continued through November, 1998.  Our grand opening was the first weekend in December, 1998.  There wasn't much time to indulge in quilt making. Needless to say, I was in a whirlwind of activity for many years afterward. Then, in 2007 Jock and myself took a rare vacation.  I boxed up the unfinished quilt and materials, sent it to our vacation destination, and began again in earnest.  I built up enough momentum during the vacation to complete the task after returning home that summer.

My maternal aunt was in the Red Cross during WWII.  Stationed in an American prisoner of war camp, she received handmade gifts from the German prisoners for whom she was responsible.  These prisoners were given simple supplies to work with and, from those pieces handed down to her, it is evident they were wonderfully creative craftsmen - a poignant paradox indeed.
