1988: Dimensional Work - Ariel of the Faeries and Tatiana the Sea Dragon, Vignette from The Medieval Fantasy Collection - Private Collection
The Medieval Fantasy Collection is a tapestry of figures that reoccur often in my dreams and work - the fabric that is my passion. Here, Ariel the Faery is suspended in front of a hand-painted silk linen theatrical backdrop fringed with both ribbons and yarns. She hovers, airborne, waiting for her sea dragon, Tatiana, who has traveled to a cove once called home. Ariel knows she must visit there from time to time but knows she will return soon.
When one considers the metaphor of the fairytale, I believe that dimensional figurative work can be as inherent in story magic as flat illustration. What was, in the beginning, an unconscious decision on my part to fabricate dimensionally, has become an integral piece to my spinning of tales.
This piece was stolen from a NYC gallery. Both gallery owner and myself were dismayed, to say the least. I have not had any other work disappear, but this has always haunted me. I hope Ariel and her dragon, Titania, are installed well and are in a happy environment.
