1986: Dimensional Work - The French Hare from The Medieval Fantasy Collection - Private Collection
As I record this body of work I have created, I see animal subjects that I have chosen to interpret over a span of years. One is rabbits and hares. I am intrigued with the paradox of their inherent agile strength, joie de vivre, and yet fragile vulnerability. My intention has been to translate these aspects in flat and dimensional work This piece was fabricated from a most wonderful antique satin and linen backed trapunto skirt that I bought for a song on Peaks Island, Maine. It seems folks were wanting to clean out summer home attics. The fabrics, beads, and buttons I purchased that summer have been the most marvelous of treasures.
It is exciting to compare 2013 "Heelis Helleborus, the White Hare for All Seasons," with this early piece from The Medieval Fantasy Collection. For me, the spirit of compassion is alive in both.
